The shape of a spurtle really allowed me to show off the grain and coloring of this wood. It turned out to be a special piece... it took a lot of work, but it was worth it! This type of pear is extremely hard when cured, and the wood must be entirely dry before the spalting process can begin.
I took great care to preserve some of the sapwood, the layer just under the bark, because this one had such a unique pattern. I altered the design somewhat so as not to lose it.
All of my work is one of a kind, but this piece could truly never be replicated. The lines of the spalting, the sapwood, the design, are all unique. That said, it is not for display. This is a very solid kitchen utensil that is meant to be used as a working tool. It is pretty though!
I think whoever buys this will enjoy using it. As always, my woodwork is sustainably sourced from trees that are storm damaged or that must be thinned. Each piece is entirely hand made in the ancient greenwood tradition. I use only a hand saw, a small axe and knives. These are heirloom quality spoons that, if properly cared for, will last for generations.
