That is really the best thing about Gerard's book, the Elizabethan English. He managed one of the royal forest gardens and it is believed that Shakespear was his neighbor. I imagine that such plays as Midsummer Night's Dream were written in Gerard's garden!

John Gerard. His herbal is still in print. John Parkinson was the better herbalist and botanist, but he was Catholic, so his herbal has not been in print for 400 years or so.
